Author De Nichols explores this history of protest art from the 1960's to the present day by examining the meaning and impact of iconic protest art on society. The meaning of Keith Haring's art from the AIDS crisis and Jacob Lawrence's representation of Black life in Harlem are brilliantly explained by unpacking meaning through symbolism, color, and technique. Typography techniques are also examined as way to express emotions visually through text. Protests from South Africa and China are addressed as well as protests in the United States, with recent topics such as Parkland, Black Lives Matter, and climate activists all highlighted in a chapter on youth protests. The art in this book is amazing. Illustrated by a group of young artists itself, the bold colors and fonts used in the graphic design illustrate technique and provide examples for readers. Each chapter ends with steps readers can follow to make their voices heard through creative and beautiful art that is full of meaning and emotion. This book would appeal to teens who are ready to take on the injustices of the world as well as art teachers who will be inspired to include protest art in their curriculums.
