The American Alliance of Museums (AAM) recently announced that the current COVID pandemic and economic crisis will force a third of American museums to discontinue their operations and close permanently by the end of 2020. Because of the historic racial discrimination, decreased capacity, and divestment in funding that cultural--and often smaller—museums and institutions have faced, one can predict that a disproportionate amount of closing organizations will include Black-led and Black-focused museums, historic houses, galleries, and cultural spaces. Such troubles place an imminent and direct threat on the ability of cities and communities across the nation to sustain the collection, protection, and celebration of Black cultural artifacts, historical archives, and artworks.
